Oil on canvas by German artist Rudi Mullers Item # 2007 Antique German landscapes,German landscape oil on board by artist Rudi Mullers. This painting dates from the 1890s. This landscape painting depicts a man in a field with what looks like two cyprus trees, houses in the distance and a lovely blue sky. This painting measures 10 and and one half inches by 6 and 5/8 inches. The original frame measures 17 inches by 13 inches. Signed lower right. Antique Raj Indian Occupational oil Painting Item # 981 "India paintings" antique painting,The English in India were curious about everything, particularly people. To satisfy this interest, as well as the English penchant for collecting, Indian artist painted sets of small pictures showing many categories of humanity. Just as tourists of today are assailed by hawkers waving postcards, earlier travelers were approached by picture sellers with renderings of local views, famous personages, local castes, and occupations." [See ROOM FOR WONDER-INDIAN PAINTING DURING THE BRITISH PERIOD 1760-1880, by Stuart Cary Welch.] It is clear by the quality of this picture that it was rendered by a skilled artist, and is far superior to most of the work that was churned out by hack artists and hawked along the wharves and streets. The original handwritten label (reattached)on the back of the picture denotes "blacksmith" in Hindu.
