"India paintings" antique painting,The English in India were curious about everything, particularly people. To satisfy this interest, as well as the English penchant for collecting, Indian artist painted sets of small pictures showing many categories of humanity. Just as tourists of today are assailed by hawkers waving postcards, earlier travelers were approached by picture sellers with renderings of local views, famous personages, local castes, and occupations." [See ROOM FOR WONDER-INDIAN PAINTING DURING THE BRITISH PERIOD 1760-1880, by Stuart Cary Welch.] It is clear by the quality of this picture that it was rendered by a skilled artist, and is far superior to most of the work that was churned out by hack artists and hawked along the wharves and streets. The original handwritten label (reattached)on the back of the picture denotes "blacksmith" in Hindu. The oil on canvas of Hamburg Cove measures 34 and one half inches wide and 29 and one half inches tall with the frame and canvas measures 29 and one half inches wide and 24 and one half inches tall.
