Nathan Margolis Watercolor Beach Scene Item # 3501 "Nathan Margolis Water color" This Margolis watercolor measures 23 inches by 17 and one half inches Nathan Margolis watercolor. Nathan Margolis, listed as a painter, lithographer, designer and screen-printer, was born in 1908 in Philadelphia, PA. He studied at the University of PA (BS), Harvard, Temple (MFA), and the Barnes Foundation. He was a member of the CT Academy of Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Print Club, the American Color Printers Society, the Philadelphia Art Alliance, and the Artists' Equity Association in NYC. He exhibited widely between 1936 and 1957: the Art Institute of Chicago, Library of Congress, CT Academy of Fine Arts, Cleveland Print Makers, PA Academy of Fine Arts, and the Art Club of Philadelphia, among others. John Lavalle Vintage oil on Canvas of Virgin Mary at Prayer titled Madonna Item # 3508 Oil on canvas full-face portrait of the Virgin Mary at prayer, titled Madonna, signed John Lavalle, and dated 1933. The renaissance-style gold leaf frame has flat column sides and polychrome painted panels across the top and at the base. John Lavalle's work does not bring strong prices at auction. This is surprising, because he was well-schooled (Harvard University (AB) Boston, Museum of Fine Art School with Philip Hale; Academie Julian, Paris, Jean Francis Auburtin, Paris), and his work was shown and awarded at many top level exhibitions and galleries (PAFA Annual, NAD, Corcoran Gallery, etc). This portrait is painted in a carefully controlled style with a minimum of texture on the canvas. Antique Easel in Hand wrought iron Item # 3907 Rare antique Easel in Hand wrought iron. This wrought iron "Easel" is very much the quality of work done by Samuel Yellin. Samuel Yellin made very similar iron ornamentation as the top of this wonderful easel. See page 49 of Samuel Yellin Metal worker by Jack Andrews page 49. This easel was made with the finest craftsmanship. Each section is pinned to the other. The letters are pinned as well. The adjustable arms are so well made one just moves them in any position and they stay to hold the heaviest of all paintings. The back adjustable arm works in the same manor. This easel was acquired from a very important New York City Estate. The easel measures 92 and one half inches high and 39 and one half inches across its base. The arms are six and one half inches deep. The letters are M and R. C1930. This is with out a doubt the best easel we have ever handled and any oil painting or work of art could be held or displayed on it. This item is in our antiques archives and is NOT AVAILABLE for sale.
