Toos Van Broesbeck oil painting on board of 3 men in a windowed room c1850. Two are seated at a table with a bottle; one holds a tumbler, the other a letter. A third figure sits on the floor. Probably Dutch, done in the 17th century style. Signed in pencil on back. Measures 12 and one half by 9 and one half inches. The period gold leaf frame measures 12 and one half by 15 and one half inches.

The painting measures 7 by 9 and one half inches, and the original gold leaf frame measures 12 and one quarter by 9 and one quarter inches. Unsigned.

John Byam Shaw watercolor illustration labeled verso Woman Turned Serving Man. John Byam Shaw was born in Madras, India, in 1872, and died in London in 1919. He studied at the St. Johns Wood School of Art and at the Royal Academy School. Later, he and Rex Vicat Cole were partners in the School of Art in Campden Hill. Shaw worked in oil, watercolour, pastel, pen and ink, and also used such techniques as dyeing and gilding. He painted in the truth and sincerity style of the Pre-Raphaelites, using pure pigments that resulted in brilliant jewel tones.
