This still life painting measures 27 and three quarters inches by 19 and one quarter inches. Jennie (1872 to 1961) and Fannie Burr (1858-1931) were 2 of 5 children born into Monroe, CTs most prominent family. Their father was a very successful farmer. Although the 2 sisters were 14 years apart, they were close. Fannie began to draw as a child. She later attended and graduated from the Yale School of Fine Arts. After that, she studied at the Art Students League in NYC. These accomplishments were very rare for a young woman in those days. Young Jennie followed in her older sisters footsteps. She also began to draw as a child, but when she was of age, she went off to Mount Holyoke College to study liberal arts.While there, she took art classes, and her talent really emerged. She left Mount Holyoke after 2 years. She entered the Yale School of Fine Arts in 1895. She won prizes while there and impressed both her teachers and her fellow students.
